Seeing the Opportunities God Places Before Us

Seeing the Opportunities God Places Before Us

One of the most fulfilling aspects of the Christian life is being used by God to positively influence the people around us. But how do we become the vessels through which God works in the lives of others? The process begins with a simple yet profound shift in our perspective: we need to start seeing the opportunities God places in front of us. This may sound straightforward, but it requires intentionality and a heart focused not on ourselves but on those around us.

Looking Beyond Ourselves

In today’s fast-paced world, it’s easy to become consumed with our own problems, needs, and desires. We often find ourselves so wrapped up in our personal struggles that we lose sight of the people around us. This inward focus can blind us to the very opportunities God is presenting for us to make a difference in someone else’s life.

The first step to being used by God is to turn our cares over to Him. This means placing our trust in God to handle the challenges we face. When we surrender our burdens to Him, we free our minds and hearts to notice the needs of others. As 1 Peter 5:7 says, "Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you." By entrusting our worries to God, we can shift our focus outward and be more attuned to the people He wants us to reach.

Paying Attention to Those Around Us

Once we’ve entrusted our concerns to God, the next step is to actively look around us. Who in your life is carrying a heavy load? Who seems to be overlooked by others? There are often people in our daily lives who are struggling quietly, longing for someone to notice them and offer a word of encouragement.

In Matthew 9:36, we read about Jesus’ response to the crowds: "When He saw the crowds, He had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd." Jesus noticed the needs of the people around Him, and He was moved to compassion. He didn’t just see the crowds; He saw their struggles, their pain, and their need for guidance and comfort. This is the model we are called to follow.

We, too, are surrounded by people who are "harassed and helpless," perhaps not in the exact way the crowds were in Jesus’ time, but in ways that are just as real and pressing. It could be a co-worker who is going through a tough time, a neighbor who feels isolated, or even a family member who is overwhelmed. These are the people God is calling us to see with His eyes and reach out to with His love.

Trusting God to Work Through Us

It’s important to remember that when we step out in faith to encourage and uplift others, it’s not about our strength or wisdom. God doesn’t ask us to have all the answers or to fix every problem. He simply asks us to be willing and available, trusting Him to work through us.

Sometimes, all it takes is a simple act of kindness—a word of encouragement, a listening ear, or a helping hand. These small gestures, when done in love, can have a profound impact on someone’s life. But how do we know who to help or what to do? This is where prayer comes in. Ask God to show you how you can encourage someone else today. He is faithful to guide you to the people who need a touch of His love.

A Prayer for Compassion

Here’s a prayer that can help guide us as we seek to be used by God:

"Lord, when the troubles of our lives keep us inwardly focused, remind us to give our cares into Your keeping. Open our eyes to the needs of those around us, and let us be the hands and feet of Jesus in their lives. Help us see people like Jesus sees them and serve them in His name, amen."

This prayer is a reminder that our ability to serve others starts with a willingness to let go of our own concerns and trust God with them. As we do, we ask Him to open our eyes to the people He wants us to notice, and to give us the compassion and courage to act.

Conclusion

Being used by God to influence others positively is not about grand gestures or having everything figured out. It’s about being attentive to the opportunities He places in our path, surrendering our own burdens to Him, and being willing to reach out in love to those who are hurting. As we make this a daily practice, we’ll find that God can and will use us in ways we never imagined, bringing hope, encouragement, and the love of Christ to those who need it most.
