“Arise, O Lord! Let Not Man Prevail.” — A Prayer for Bihar and for India

By: Joshua Thangaraj Gnanasekar (Chief Editor)

The recent election results in Bihar have given us much to reflect on—not merely as citizens of a democracy, but as followers of Christ who discern the times through the lens of Scripture.

Bihar has delivered a sweeping mandate, granting more than three-fourths of the legislative power to a single party. While a clear mandate may appear to promise stability, history—both biblical and national—reminds us that unchecked power is a dangerous throne. Whenever authority concentrates into the hands of one ruler or party without meaningful opposition, pride inevitably becomes the root from which decisions spring. And pride, the Bible warns, goes before destruction (Proverbs 16:18).

In the victory speeches of the winning leaders, we hear tones of triumph that often place them “above the world” and “larger than life.” This posture is not merely political rhetoric; it is a warning sign. When leaders begin to portray themselves as invincible, the vulnerable begin to tremble, minorities begin to feel unsafe, and the nation edges toward imbalance. Bihar now stands in such a moment—a state without an opposition, without a counter-voice, without the democratic friction necessary to restrain excess and guard justice.

As Christians, we cannot ignore this reality—especially in a land where our community continues to face hostility, false accusations, and targeted persecution. Bihar has long been referred to, painfully, as “the graveyard of missionaries.” Many servants of God have suffered here; many seeds of the gospel have been watered by tears rather than celebration.

This is why these election results matter to us—not for partisan reasons, but for spiritual ones.

The Spiritual Danger of an Unquestioned Throne

Scripture consistently shows that when kings forget humility, nations suffer. When leaders stop listening, oppression begins. When rulers exalt themselves, God Himself intervenes.

Nebuchadnezzar gloried in his power—until the Lord humbled him.

Herod received the praise of men—until the Lord struck him.

Pharaoh hardened his heart—until his entire nation bore the consequence.

Power without accountability has never been a path to righteousness. A government without opposition is not merely a political concern; it is a spiritual one.

Our Calling in Such a Time

We do not respond with fear, nor with anger—but with prayer, conviction, and unwavering faith.

Let us pray that the leaders of Bihar will govern with truth, with integrity, and with humility, recognizing that authority is a stewardship, not an entitlement.

Let us pray that the government provides security and dignity to all its people—Dalits, tribals, Hindus, Muslims, and especially Christians who often stand on the frontlines of discrimination.

Let us pray that Bihar will no longer be a graveyard, but a harvest field—that the gospel would flourish where it once was resisted, and that justice would reign where oppression has prevailed.

Above all, let our prayer echo the psalmist:

“Arise, O Lord! Let not man prevail.” (Psalm 9:19)

For when man prevails, pride prevails.

But when the Lord arises, righteousness prevails.

A Hope for the State, a Warning for the Nation

What Bihar reflects today is not an isolated event—it is a mirror held before the entire nation. Any government, any leader, anywhere in India, elevated beyond accountability, is tempted toward pride and injustice. As Christians, we must remain alert, discerning, and prayerful.

May Bihar’s new governance be marked not by arrogance but by accountability.

Not by domination but by service.

Not by fear but by fairness.

May the Lord be gracious to this state and to our nation.

And may we, the pilgrim people of God, continue to intercede—not because politics is our hope, but because Christ is.
