Tears of Gratitude: Loving Jesus from a Forgiven Heart
Forgiven at Jesus’ Feet
๐ Scripture: Luke 7:36-50
๐ก Theme: Love that Flows from Forgiveness
The Setting: An Unexpected Guest
Jesus is invited to dine at the home of a Pharisee named Simon. In those days, banquets like this were often semi-public, where uninvited guests could enter and observe from the sidelines.
During the meal, a woman — identified only as “a sinner” (likely referring to her reputation as immoral, possibly a prostitute) — enters the room. Her presence immediately draws disapproval from the Pharisees.
But instead of speaking, this woman does something extraordinary:
“She stood behind Him at His feet weeping, and she began to wet His feet with her tears. Then she wiped them with her hair, kissed them, and poured perfume on them.” (v. 38)
The Woman’s Bold Actions
This woman’s actions are deeply symbolic:
1. Weeping at Jesus’ Feet:
• Her tears reflect deep sorrow for her past sins.
• In Jewish culture, tears were often linked to repentance; she weeps not just from regret, but from relief — she has found in Jesus the forgiveness her soul desperately craves.
2. Wiping His Feet with Her Hair:
• For a woman to let down her hair in public was considered scandalous in Jewish culture. Yet her humility overrides social norms.
• She offers what she has — her hair — in an act of pure devotion.
3. Kissing His Feet:
• This gesture reflects deep reverence and love. By lowering herself to Jesus’ feet, she acknowledges Him as her Lord.
4. Pouring Perfume on His Feet:
• Perfume was expensive and often a woman’s most valuable possession.
• By anointing Jesus, she demonstrates her willingness to pour out what she holds dear in response to His grace.
๐ฌHer actions reveal true repentance, humility, and love — all flowing from an awareness of her forgiven past.
Simon’s Judgment and Jesus’ Response
Simon, the Pharisee, is disturbed by what he witnesses. Inwardly, he criticizes Jesus:
“If this man were a prophet, He would know who is touching Him and what kind of woman she is — that she is a sinner.” (v. 39)
In response, Jesus tells Simon a parable about two debtors:
“Two people owed money to a certain moneylender. One owed him five hundred denarii, and the other fifty. Neither had the money to pay him back, so he forgave the debts of both. Now which of them will love him more?” (v. 41-42)
Simon answers correctly: “The one who had the bigger debt forgiven.” (v. 43)
๐ฌJesus uses this parable to reveal a profound truth — the greater our awareness of sin and forgiveness, the deeper our love for Jesus.
Jesus’ Words to the Woman
Turning to the woman, Jesus highlights the contrast between her actions and Simon’s:
• Simon failed to provide water for Jesus’ feet — but she washed them with her tears.
• Simon offered no customary greeting kiss — but she kissed His feet continually.
• Simon neglected to anoint Jesus’ head — but she poured costly perfume on His feet.
Then Jesus declares:
“Her many sins have been forgiven—as her great love has shown. But whoever has been forgiven little loves little.” (v. 47)
๐ฌ Jesus wasn’t suggesting Simon had less sin, but rather that Simon’s pride blinded him to his own need for forgiveness.
Finally, Jesus says to the woman:
“Your sins are forgiven… Your faith has saved you; go in peace.” (v. 48, 50)
Key Lessons for Us Today
✅ Forgiveness Awakens Love: The woman’s extravagant love was the result of her deep awareness of how much she had been forgiven. The greater our understanding of God’s mercy, the more deeply we will love Him.
✅ Pride Can Blind Us to Our Need: Simon’s self-righteousness kept him from recognizing his own sin. We must guard against pride that blinds us to our need for Jesus.
✅ Jesus Offers Full Restoration: The woman left not only forgiven, but also with a sense of peace and dignity restored. When Jesus forgives, He restores us wholly.
✅ Our Love is Our Response to Grace: Jesus didn’t forgive the woman because of her actions — her actions flowed from the grace she had already received. True love for Jesus is born out of gratitude for His mercy.
Reflection Questions
1. Are you aware of how deeply God has forgiven you? How has that awareness shaped your love for Jesus?
2. Have you ever struggled with self-righteousness like Simon? How can you guard your heart from pride?
3. In what ways can you express your love for Jesus through acts of gratitude and devotion this week?
Prayer
๐ Lord, I come before You acknowledging my sin and brokenness. Thank You for the depth of Your mercy and forgiveness. May my heart overflow with love for You, just as the woman at Your feet demonstrated. Help me to live each day in gratitude and devotion to You. Amen.
