When Doubt Creeps In: Trusting Jesus Through Uncertainty
John the Baptist’s Question
π Scripture: Luke 7:18-35
π‘ Theme: Doubt, Faith, and God’s Plan
The Context: A Season of Doubt
John the Baptist, the bold prophet who once declared Jesus as the “Lamb of God” (John 1:29), now finds himself in a dark and discouraging place — prison. Confined by King Herod for speaking out against his immoral actions (Luke 3:19-20), John’s circumstances had drastically changed. Once preaching in the wilderness, now he was trapped behind cold stone walls with nothing but silence to fill his thoughts.
In this season of isolation and uncertainty, doubt crept in. The powerful prophet who once spoke with conviction now questioned if Jesus was truly the Messiah.
John’s Honest Question
John sent two of his disciples to Jesus with a profound yet vulnerable question:
“Are You the One who is to come, or should we expect someone else?” (v. 19)
This question reveals John’s inner turmoil. He had faithfully prepared the way for Jesus, yet Jesus’ ministry didn’t seem to be unfolding as expected. John may have anticipated a Messiah who would bring swift judgment and deliverance — yet here he was, imprisoned, while evil seemed to thrive.
π¬ Even the strongest believers can face moments of doubt when God’s timing or methods don’t align with their expectations.
Jesus’ Response: Evidence Over Emotion
Instead of giving a direct “yes” or “no,” Jesus pointed John’s disciples to the evidence of His ministry:
“Go back and report to John what you have seen and heard: The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is proclaimed to the poor.” (v. 22)
By quoting these miracles, Jesus referred to the messianic prophecies from Isaiah 35:5-6 and Isaiah 61:1 — clear signs that He was fulfilling God’s promises. Each miracle displayed His power to restore, heal, and redeem — evidence that the Kingdom of God had arrived.
Jesus concluded by saying:
“Blessed is anyone who does not stumble on account of Me.” (v. 23)
π¬ Jesus gently reminded John that God’s plan may not always unfold as expected, but His works reveal that He is indeed the promised Messiah.
Affirming John’s Faithfulness
After addressing John’s disciples, Jesus turned to the crowd and spoke highly of John’s ministry:
“I tell you, among those born of women there is no one greater than John…” (v. 28)
Despite John’s moment of doubt, Jesus honored his faithfulness and affirmed his role as the forerunner of the Messiah. Yet Jesus added something remarkable:
”…yet the one who is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.” (v. 28)
Here, Jesus emphasized that those who experience the fullness of His redemptive work — the new covenant in Christ — would be even more privileged than John.
π¬ Jesus acknowledges our doubts yet affirms our identity in Him when we remain faithful.
The Challenge to the Crowd
Jesus contrasted those who accepted His message with those who rejected it. The religious leaders had criticized both John for being too strict and Jesus for being too merciful. Their refusal to embrace God’s plan exposed their hardness of heart.
“Wisdom is proved right by all her children.” (v. 35)
In other words, the true wisdom of God’s plan is revealed through those who accept and live by it.
π¬ When we approach Jesus with open hearts, we witness the transformative power of His Kingdom.
Key Lessons for Us Today
✅ Even Strong Believers Face Doubt: John’s question reminds us that doubt is not failure. When we face confusion or uncertainty, we can honestly bring our questions to Jesus.
✅ Jesus Points Us to Evidence: When doubt arises, Jesus encourages us to remember the truths of Scripture, the evidence of His work, and the transformation we’ve seen in our lives and others.
✅ God’s Plan Often Looks Different Than Expected: John anticipated a Messiah of swift judgment, but Jesus revealed that God’s plan was first to bring grace, healing, and restoration.
✅ Our Identity Is Secure in Christ: Despite John’s doubts, Jesus affirmed his greatness. Our struggles don’t define us — our identity in Christ does.
Reflection Questions

2. How can you remind yourself of Jesus’ past faithfulness when doubt arises?
3. What evidence of Jesus’ transforming power have you seen in your life or others’?
Prayer
π Lord, I confess that there are times when doubt clouds my heart. Just as You reassured John, point me back to the evidence of Your power and goodness. Strengthen my faith and help me to trust Your perfect plan, even when I don’t understand it. Amen.
