Christians Among Dozens Killed in Renewed Wave of Extremist Attacks in Northern Mozambique
Date of Update: 11 August 2025
A fresh wave of Islamist militant violence has swept through Mozambique’s northern province of Cabo Delgado, leaving over 35 people dead, including Christians. The attacks have triggered widespread destruction, abductions, and the mass displacement of thousands.
Timeline of the Attacks
22 July — Intutupue:
Five civilians beheaded after being caught producing homemade alcohol. Militants labelled them “Christian infidels” in Islamic State propaganda.24 July — Chiúre Velho:
Militants raided the District Police Command, setting fire to a school, health clinic, and the police station. Footage surfaced with a chilling warning:
“Christians must convert to Islam if they want to escape suffering and find salvation in heaven.”28 July — Naparama:
Eighteen people killed, homes and motorbikes destroyed.30 July — Muanquina:
Two churches, a house of prayer, and 43 Christian homes burned. Bibles torn up, pastor kidnapped and still missing.1 August — Marera:
Fifteen Christians killed while fleeing homes that had been torched earlier.3 August — Naphela:
Nine members of one family—including children—abducted while attempting to escape an attack.
Humanitarian Impact
Over 42,000 people in Chiúre now displaced, more than half of them children.
95,000 people displaced across Mozambique since January 2025.
Over 1.3 million already displaced in Cabo Delgado since 2017.
Targeted Persecution of Christians
Eyewitnesses report that attackers deliberately burn churches while leaving mosques intact, and specifically target Christian households. One observer noted:
“They can burn a church and leave a mosque. Burn a house and leave another… Why have Christians not gone back?”
Such actions appear calculated to eradicate Christian presence from the region.
What’s at Stake
This is not merely random violence—it is a deliberate, organised assault on Christian communities. Pastors, churches, and believers are being uprooted through terror, arson, abduction, and murder.
