Christian Foster Families in Massachusetts Defy State Mandate, Launch Legal Battle Over Gender Identity Policy

The Breaking News

In a landmark legal confrontation unfolding in Massachusetts, two devoutly Christian foster families have taken a bold stand against what they describe as an unjust and unconstitutional state policy. The families are suing the Massachusetts Department of Children and Families (DCF) after being told they must “affirm and support” foster children’s gender identities as a condition of maintaining their licenses.

The lawsuit, filed September 3, 2025, marks one of the strongest challenges yet to the state’s aggressive gender identity mandates.

  • The Jones family, who has faithfully cared for their foster daughter since infancy, now faces the possibility of losing her because they cannot in good conscience affirm an ideology that contradicts their biblical convictions.
  • The Schrock family, who has fostered 28 children over six years, has already had their license revoked, effectively shutting their door to children in need because of their faith.

Both families are represented by the Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF), a legal organization standing for religious liberty. ADF attorneys argue the policy violates the First and Fourteenth Amendments, warning that it weaponizes state power to force families into compliance with ideology or risk losing children.

“Massachusetts is willing to remove young infants and toddlers with no understanding of ‘gender identity’ from loving homes because of their Christian beliefs,” said ADF Senior Counsel Johannes Widmalm-Delphonse, calling the policy “trauma-inducing for the very children the state claims to protect.”

With over 1,400 children waiting for foster placement, critics say the state is worsening its foster crisis by driving away committed families in the name of ideology.

The Massachusetts Department of Health and Human Services has declined to comment on the pending lawsuit. The families are asking the court to block enforcement, declare the mandate unconstitutional, and protect their right to foster without violating their faith.

Why This Matters

This is not merely a Massachusetts issue. The outcome of this case could set a precedent across the United States, determining whether Christian families will be able to participate in foster care without compromising their beliefs—or whether the state will redefine who qualifies as a “fit” parent based on ideological conformity.

At stake is the balance between religious freedom and government mandates in one of the most sensitive areas of society: the protection and nurture of vulnerable children.

Editorial Commentary: The Deception of False Freedom

Beneath the legal arguments lies a deeper moral and spiritual battle. The ideology behind this mandate is not neutral. It redefines truth, identity, and family according to human desire instead of divine order.

The LGBTQ+ movement promises “freedom”—freedom to redefine gender, freedom to break God’s design for sexuality, freedom to live without moral boundaries. But this is a false freedom. It enslaves individuals in confusion, leading not to wholeness but to brokenness.

Policies like Massachusetts’ foster mandate claim to “protect children,” yet they do the opposite. They tear children from safe, loving homes, not because those homes lack care, but because parents refuse to bend to ideological coercion. This is not protection—it is indoctrination enforced by state power.

Scripture warns: “They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped created things rather than the Creator” (Romans 1:25). What we see today is exactly that exchange. The world calls rebellion “progress,” and deception “freedom.” But the end is confusion, despair, and judgment.

True freedom is not found in self-definition. It is found in surrender to Jesus Christ, who declared: “If the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed” (John 8:36). Only in Christ can a child, a family, and a nation discover their true identity and lasting hope.

As Pilgrim Echoes, we stand firm:

  • With compassion, to love and reach those deceived by false promises.
  • With courage, to proclaim that the gospel of Jesus Christ is the only power that brings real freedom.
